Interior Alaska 2020 Road Construction Updates

We all know there's two seasons in Alaska - Winter and Construction. Construction has already begun with many projects scheduled for Interior Alaska’s roadways during this busy short summer season. Plans include road reconstruction, bridge replacements, surface upgrades, ramp and intersection improvements, round-a-bout construction, lighting and signal work and sidewalk, bike path and barrier upgrades.

2020 INTERIOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS - Updated August 3

CHENA HOT SPRINGS ROAD MP 0 to 6 REHABILITATION and STEESE HIGHWAY/CHENA HOT SPRINGS ROAD ROUNDABOUTS : Road Construction through the season

ROAD CONSTRUCTION through the season

  • Crews are working on Chena Hot Springs Road between MP 0 and MP 6.
  • Please be aware of crews working along the roadway and shoulder of Chena Hot Springs Road between MP 0 and 1 between 7:00am and 5:00pm.

CHENA PUMP ROAD / BICYCLE PEDESTRIAN FACILITY REHABILITATION : Road Construction through June

  • Through Sunday, August 9, drivers should be aware of equipment in the roadway and crews working along the shoulder of northbound Chena Pump Road. 

COLLEGE ROAD MEDIAN EXTENSION : Road Construction through the season

  • No activity is planned for this project in the coming week.

DAVIS ROAD RESURFACING : Road Construction through July

  • Drivers should expect intermittent flagging operations within the active work zone.
  • Please be aware of workers on the shoulder and in the roadway.

ELLIOT HIGHWAY MP 0 TO 12 REHABILITATION : Road Construction through October

  • Drivers should be aware of crews working on the shoulder and in the roadway.

FAIRBANKS AREA CONCRETE BARRIER UPGRADE : Road Construction through the season

  • On Thursday, July 30, from 6:00am to 7:00pm, drivers should be aware of crews working at the Richardson Highway overpass at Santa Clause Lane.
  • Drivers should expect LANE CLOSURES in both northbound and southbound directions along the Richardson Highway.
  • Please drive with caution and be alert to work trucks entering and exiting traffic.
  • In the fall, drivers should expect intermittent LANE CLOSURES on Mitchell Expressway from Lathrop Street to the Richardson Highway on- and off-ramps

FAIRBANKS AREA SIGNAL UPGRADES : Road Construction through December

  • Drivers should be aware of temporary LANE CLOSURES at various intersections throughout Fairbanks as crews switch over to new signals.

FAIRBANKS RAMP SIGHT DISTANCE IMPROVEMENTS : Road Construction through the season

  • Crews are working at the intersection of Illinois Street, College Road, and Bentley Trust Road.
  • Through Sunday, August 2, crews will be working on the removal and replacement of catch basins and new curbs and gutters along Illinois Street.
  • Beginning Monday, August 31, the right-turn lane from Illinois Street and College Road will be reconstructed into the new traffic configuration. Please be aware of crews working in the construction zone and special detours for pedestrians.

FAST AREA SURFACE UPGRADES & INTERSECTION IMPROVEMENTS : Road Construction through October

  • Drivers should be aware of flagging operations and DELAYS on Birch Hill Access Road.
  • Please expect ONE-WAY TRAFFIC at South Davis Park Access Road, beginning at the intersection of Davis Road and Wilbur Street and extending along 25th Avenue until Lathrop Street.
  • Crews will be working at the following sites throughout the summer:
    • Bonnifield Street (3rd Avenue to 6th Avenue)
    • E Street (Baranof Avenue to Craig Avenue)
    • Le Ann Drive (Joyce Drive to D Street)
    • South Davis Park (Wilbur Street and 25th Avenue)
    • Birch Hill Access Road (Wilderness Drive to Upper Parking Lot)
    • 1st Avenue & Lacey Street Intersection
    • 10th Avenue & Lathrop Street Intersection

FMATS SIDEWALK IMPROVEMENTS : Road Construction through August

  • This project is complete.

JOHANSEN EXPRESSWAY and DANBY STREET BIKE PATH RESURFACING : Road Construction through August

  • Pedestrians should be alert to crews working along the Johansen Expressway bike path between University Avenue and the Steese Highway, Monday through Saturday, from 7:00am to 7:00pm.
  • Pedestrians should be aware of various bike path closures due to work on the chain link fence along the Johansen Expressway between University Avenue and the Steese Highway. Please use alternate routes as construction equipment will occupy the entire width of the path.
  • Drivers should be alert to intermittent shoulder work along the entire length of the Johansen Expressway.

McGRATH ROAD UPGRADE : Road Construction through the season

Road Closure

The intersection of McGrath Road and Farmers Loop Road will be CLOSED on Saturday, August 8 and Sunday, August 9 as crews install a cross culvert.

  • Crews are performing excavation and asphalt removal operations between Farmers Loop Road and Willow Grouse Road. Drivers should expect large hauling vehicles and construction equipment in the narrow roadway prism.
  • Excavation operations along the shoulder of the roadway will result in hazardous slopes. Please abide by the traffic controls and follow PILOT CAR operations at all times.
  • Please expect SINGLE-LANE TRAFFIC and flagging operations. Access to driveways will be blocked off while culverts are being installed. Please be patient with the culvert crew if your driveway is blocked. Access will be granted as soon as possible.
  • Drivers should expect DELAYS with PILOT CAR and flagging operations being conducted 24/7.
  • Please be aware of a narrow road section south of the PILOT CAR operations as a spring has made a portion of the road unsuitable for traffic.

RICHARDSON HIGHWAY, MP 353 to 357 ACCESS IMPROVEMENTS : Road Construction through the season

  • Drivers should expect LANE CLOSURES as crews perform electrical work.

TANANA LOOP and SOUTH CHANDALAR DRIVE INTERSECTIONS & UAF DENALI LANE DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS : Road Construction through August

Road Closure

Denali Lane is CLOSED to through traffic.

  • Pedestrian and bicycle traffic should follow DETOURS around and through the construction area.

UNIVERSITY AVENUE and AIRPORT WAY RECONSTRUCTION : Road Construction through October

Road Closure

University Avenue is currently CLOSED between Airport Way and Rewak Drive. This closure is expected to last until October 2020. Please follow the posted pedestrian and vehicle DETOUR ROUTES.

University Avenue is also currently CLOSED between Airport Way and Goldizen Avenue. This closure will last until October 2021 during construction at the intersection of University Avenue and Airport Way and the replacement of the Chena River Bridge.

  • Please follow the posted pedestrian and vehicle DETOUR ROUTES. 
  • Drivers should be aware of ONE-LANE TRAFFIC in both directions on Airport Way.
  • Please follow the reduced speed limits in the construction zone. 
  • Pedestrians will be able to access the project area. Please follow pedestrian signage to ensure safe travels through the construction project. 

UNIVERSITY AVENUE WIDENING, REHAB, and BRIDGE REPLACEMENT : Road Construction through October 2021

ROAD CLOSURE

Through October 2021, University Avenue is CLOSED to vehicular traffic between Airport Way and Goldizen Avenue. Please follow the posted DETOUR ROUTES.

  • Pedestrian and bicycle access will remain OPEN through the construction zone on University Avenue between Goldizen and Airport. Please follow pedestrian access signs to ensure safe travels through the construction zone.A pedestrian bridge will allow for access over the Chena River during the project.

WENDELL AVENUE BRIDGE REPLACEMENT : Road Construction through the season

This project is expected to begin in August 2020.
